Is it better to eat regular white flour, wheat, or whole grain tortillas?

Save

Hi there and thank you for your question!

When choosing breads, tortillas and other grains, I encourage choosing whole grains. Whole grains provide more fiber, vitamins, minerals and other important nutrients than refined grains, such as white flour tortillas and white bread (1). So in this case, I would choose the whole grain tortillas if they are made from mostly whole grain ingredients.

Food labels can be confusing! To check if tortillas or any other grain you are considering is truly a whole grain:

  • check the list of ingredients and see if the first ingredient shows the word "whole" (such as "whole wheat flour" or "stoneground whole corn")
  • you can also find this 100% Whole Grain Stamp on some grain products, which means all the grain ingredients in the product are all whole grain
100% Whole Grain Stamp

Refined grains, such as white flour tortillas and white bread, can still be part of a healthy eating pattern. Since whole grains provide more health benefits, I encourage choosing whole grains more often.

There are many more whole grain options to try other than whole grain tortillas! Learn more about how to include more whole grains in your meals on our Lifestyle page or try one of our recipes Hummus and Veggie Wraps or Banana Sushi (my personal favorite) using your whole grain tortillas.

I hope this helps!

Cheers,

Anna Ng, RD
