How much sugar per day is safe or recommended for a child, man and woman?

Save

Hi and thank you for your question!

First, let's clarify the type of sugar we are talking about. There are two main types of sugar.

  1. There are natural sugars found in foods such as fruits, vegetables and milk
  2. There are added sugars that are added to processed foods and beverages such as sweetened tea and soda.

Natural sugars and most forms of added sugars can be safe to consume in moderate amounts, and both can be part of healthy eating pattern.

Currently, there are only guidelines for added sugars. The American Heart Association recommends 38 grams or 9 teaspoons of added sugars for most men and 25 grams or 6 teaspoon of added sugars for most women and children.

Hope this helps!
