"How often will my newborn need to eat?"

Your newborn will need to breastfeed 10 or more times each day.
  • Your newborn baby is full.
  • Colostrum is your newborn's first food. It comes in small amounts and is just what your baby needs.
  • Your baby will give you hunger cues to let you know when it is time to eat, like sucking noises or fists to the baby's mouth.
  • You may need to wake your baby so he can eat. It is ok to do this – your baby is growing and needs to eat.
  • Babies will let you know when they are hungry once you know the cues – they can’t be missed. Enjoy this special time with your baby!
  • You will know that your baby is getting enough to eat by the number of wet and soiled diapers your baby makes each day.
  • During growth spurts, your baby will want to eat more than what has been the usual pattern. This is ok because your baby needs more breastmilk to grow stronger.
