Is soluble or insoluble fiber considered prebiotics?

I get a lot of questions about prebiotics and probiotics.  So let me tell you the difference between them first:

  • Probiotics are live bacteria found in some foods and supplements.  There are many studies that show that eating probiotics can have some health benefits.  Examples of foods with probiotics are yogurt, sauerkraut and kimchi.
  • Prebiotics are substances usually found in carbohydrates, mostly fiber, that our bodies can't digest.  The healthy bacteria living in our gut eats the prebiotics.  
  • So probiotics are beneficial bacteria while prebiotics are foods for the bacteria.

Prebiotics can usually be found in vegetables, fruits, and legumes.  These types of foods have the fiber that when converted in our bodies have shown some health benefits.
